Hyundai Launches the 6th Generation Elantra in Malaysia - Three Variants featuring Two Engines with Prices from RM116,388 Onwards

Hyundai-Sime Darby Motors (HSDM) has unveiled the all-new 6th generation Elantra after a teaser preview last month. Available in 3 variants, the 2.0 MPI Executive, 2.0 MPI Dynamic and the Elantra Sport, the all-new Elantra will be displayed at all Hyundai showrooms starting June 9, 2017, with test drive units also available at Hyundai showrooms.

Powering the Elantra 2.0L MPI Executive and 2.0L MPI Dynamic (above) is a 2.0L 4-cylinder engine, which delivers 152 PS at 6,200 rpm and 192Nm of torque at 4,000rpm.  The Nu 2.0L MPI is paired with Hyundai’s 6-speed automatic transmission.

The Elantra Sport (above) that is mated with to an ECOSHIFT 7-speed dual-clutch transmission on the other hand is powered by the Gamma 1.6 Turbo GDI (T-GDI) four-cylinder engine that generates 204 PS at 6,000 rpm and 265Nm of torque at 1,500-4,500 rpm. This makes it one of the most powerful C segment cars on sale today. The powertrain and drivetrain should make for a spirited drive.

As for styling, the new Elantra builds on Hyundai's Fluidic Design styling that was also used in the previous generation of the Elantra. What you can notice is that the lines are tighter than before, the front grille made more prominent and the bumper grilles pulled to the extreme ends on the front end. The focus of the design allows the eyes to focus on the front of the car. The nose is the most prominent design of the car. The overall styling is quite pleasant and looks good from all angles. It should age well. Just like how the previous generation did as it still looked good right up to the end of its production.

Comprehensive Safety Features included for all variants (unless stated) are Vehicle Stability Management (VSM) ,Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Hill-start Assist Control, 6 Airbags, Emergency Fastening Device and Blind Spot Detection (Applicable for Elantra Sport only).

Other notable equipment includes the Hands-free Smart Trunk (explained in the press release below), an infotainment AV System that supports Android Auto and Car Play, Rear camera, Auto Cruise Control and Front and Rear Parking Assist. Of course, the cars are very well equipped for the price offered, which is actually very competitive.

The 2.0liter Dynamic model with everything in it sells from RM120,588 onwards. The 1.6liter Elantra Sport, comes in at a very competitive RM131,488 before insurance. This makes the Elantra one of the few C-segment cars with over 200hp sold here in Malaysia.

It could be the most affordable 200hp car on sale today. The torque figures are also as good as their Hyundai IONIQ hybrid launched ealier. Also another performance packed offering from Hyundai. Something to ponder folks.

Prices of the new variants are as follows:
 2.0 MPI Executive – RM116,388 (On the road price without insurance, for Peninsular Malaysia)

 2.0 MPI Dynamic – RM120,588 (On the road price without insurance, for Peninsular Malaysia)

 Elantra Sport – RM131,488 (On the road price without insurance, for Peninsular Malaysia)

All Elantra variants are entitled to 50,000km of free service with a three-year validity.

Dynamic Precision – The new 2.0 Fluidic Design Language

The Exterior

Dynamic Precision is the new design concept for the 6 th generation Elantra. The

completely redesigned all-new Elantra delivers an athletic presence from every angle.

Its prominent hexagonal front grille dominates an edgier front end and is framed by

striking headlights. Front bumper air vents and the available LED daytime running lights

provide more aggressive styling cues, while the rear bumper creates a sportier stance.

Available High Intensity Discharge (HID) headlights (for Elantra Sport only) not only

provide sophisticated styling, but also offer optimized illumination for the bends and

curves on your path.

The side profile is designed with a sense of sporty and coupe like silhouette while the

rear is extremely impactful with eye-catching split type LED Tail lamps. The

aerodynamic profile of the car along with innovative wheel air curtain, a smoother

under-body structure with undercover applied to the entire floor plan and other

advanced design package technologies have resulted in the Best-in- Class drag

coefficient of 0.27.

The Interior

The new A-Pillar design and attention to detail makes the interior more spacious and

comfortable. The new cockpit is also ergonomically designed with multimedia and

control buttons placed strategically for the driver. The driver-centric horizontal crash pad

layout with T-shaped centre fascia and a subtle tilt towards driver’s seat ensures

minimal driver movement for comfortable and safe driving. It also boasts the biggest

cargo space in its class with a loading capacity of 407 liters.

New Powerful Powertrain - Nu 2.0L MPI and Gamma 1.6L Turbo GDI

The all-new Elantra comes in two powertrain options – Nu 2.0L MPI and Gamma 1.6L

Turbo GDI. Powering the Elantra 2.0L MPI Executive and 2.0L MPI Dynamic is a 2.0L

4-cylinder engine, which delivers 152 PS at 6,200 rpm and 192Nm of torque at 4,000

rpm with exceptional fuel efficiency. The Nu 2.0L MPI is paired with Hyundai’s 6-speed

automatic transmission. The Elantra Sport that is mated with to an ECOSHIFT 7-speed

dual-clutch transmission on the other hand is powered by the Gamma 1.6 Turbo GDI (T-

GDI) four-cylinder engine that generates 204 PS at 6,000 rpm and 265Nm of torque at

1,500-4,500 rpm.

High-Strength Steel with the use of 53% of Advanced High-Strength Steel

The Elantra is now reinforced with 53% of Advanced High-Strength Steel (an increase

of 32% as compared to the previous model) providing improved stiffness at a lower

body weight. This increased utilisation results in a 29.5 percent stiffer torsional rigidity

and 25.3 percent greater bending strength, which bring improvements in vehicle ride

and handling, quietness, durability and driving performance.

Furthermore, the new Elantra increased structural adhesive application 40 times at

higher stress points on the chassis and to reinforce welding areas. A component often

found in aerospace applications, these structural adhesives also contribute to improved

NVH and vehicle dynamics due to extra stiffness in the chassis. Hyundai engineers

focused on these enhancements to develop a more rigid body structure in an effort to

target top safety ratings by the IIHS and NHTSA.

Comprehensive Safety Features

In addition to the strengthened chassis, the Elantra makes structural improvements to

the front side members that are now a hexagonal design and the dash-to- cowl

connection has also been reinforced. The rear doors also feature dual impact beams.

A six airbag system is standard, along with Electronic Stability Control, Vehicle Stability

Management, Traction Control, and ABS. Additional safety technologies include Blind

Spot Detection with Rear Cross-Traffic Alert and Lane Change Assist (for Elantra Sport

only), a rear-view camera, Parking Guidance System, Tyre Pressure Monitoring System

and Hill-start Assist Control.

Intelligent Technology and Convenient Features

The Elantra truly advances ahead with innovative technology that enhances driver

confidence and convenience. The new Elantra’s segment-exclusive Hands-free Smart

Trunk, allows Elantra drivers to conveniently open the boot if their hands are full by

simply approaching the rear of the vehicle with the key fob in a purse or pocket. An

audible beep will sound three times, and the boot will automatically open, making it easy

to place items in the cargo area.

Driver’s experience is also enhanced with the new Elantra’s convenient features such

as the Auto Cruise Control which makes long distance driving more comfortable as well

as the 3 different drive modes namely Eco, Normal and Sport modes that allow the

driver to adapt the throttle, transmission and steering to their driving needs. Apart from

that, upgrades in this new model include a multimedia system that is equipped with

Android Auto and Apple Car Play while the Elantra Sport gets more intelligent features

such as an Auto Defogging System, Dual Zone Auto Climate Control and Rain-Sensing

Wipers.

Warranty and 24-hour Road Assist Service

HSDM offers a 5-year or 300,000km (whichever comes first) warranty on all its new

passenger vehicles. A 24-hour road assist service is also now available to new and

existing Hyundai vehicles. For more information or to place bookings, interested parties
